North Shore Whitecaps U14 AAA – Head Coach Update
The North Shore Whitecaps AAA Zone would like to provide an important update regarding the Head Coach position for our U14 team for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
Due to new OHF regulations related to Freedom of Movement, we have had to make a coaching change. Under these rules, any coach transferring from one association to another must receive a formal release from their original association if they wish to continue coaching at the same age level. Initially, it was our understanding that a coach who was not assigned a team by their previous association would automatically be considered released. However, after much back and forth and further clarification, we have been informed that even in cases where an association chooses not to reappoint a coach, they still have the authority to withhold a release if they wish.
Additionally, we have been made aware that associations issuing a release can impose stipulations restricting player movement. This means that players who were coached by that individual in the previous season may be prohibited from joining the same coach in their new role. These restrictions ultimately limit player options and affect their ability to exercise the principles of freedom of movement.
As a result of these circumstances, and despite many conversations with the former association, our originally announced U14 Head Coach, Jamie Showers, is unfortunately unable to be rostered in this role. In response, we are pleased to announce that Cole Williamson will take on the position of Head Coach for the U14 team.
Cole was initially set to join the team as an Assistant Coach but has stepped up to lead the program this season. A Clarington native, Cole played AAA hockey growing up and was drafted by the Sault Saint Marie Greyhounds. He went on to have a successful junior hockey career, playing Jr A in Collingwood before coming home and winning multiple championships with the Clarington Eagles. Since completing his playing career, he has transitioned into coaching and is also beginning his career as a police officer with the Durham Regional Police Service.
We appreciate the patience and understanding of our players and families as we navigate these evolving regulations. We remain committed to providing a strong development environment for all our athletes and look forward to a great season ahead with Cole leading our U14 team.
Thank you for your continued support.
